The Pros and Cons of Using Granite in Your Bathroom

Natural stone countertops never grow out of fashion and are highly desirable in today's market. Search online for the latest kitchen or bathroom remodeling trends, and you'll notice 8 out of 10 of them, including "granite countertops."

The reason? Granite countertops perform well in the bathroom due to their aesthetics, durability, and stain-resistant properties. They are also available in a wealth of colors and designs and can give your home that contemporary look you desire.

However, granite is not without drawbacks, particularly when used as the countertop material for bathrooms. In this guide, we'll explore the pros and cons of using granite in your bathroom.

Pros of Using Granite in Your Bathrooms

Granite has many characteristics that make it the ideal material for bathroom countertops. Here, we'll briefly mention a few of them.

1. Stain Resistant

Granite is stain resistant—a feature that is particularly helpful in the bathroom where products like makeup, nail polish, and toothpaste can leak and stain your countertops. While not stain-proof, as long as it's properly sealed and liquids are not left standing on it, granite will not stain.

2. Superb Durability

Granite bathroom countertops are incredibly durable.

It's likely that all the other fixtures of your bathroom will wear out long and even be replaced before the granite starts showing signs of aging.

Granite is exceptionally hard, which makes it difficult to scratch under normal conditions. Additionally, it will not melt or scorch when exposed to heat.

3. Available in a Variety of Colors and Designs

Natural stone countertops are available in a wide variety of colors and designs, making them a great choice for a bathroom remodel.

Granite, in particular, is available in different colors, including white, cream, grays, brown, and even bolder shades, such as pink, blue, or green. No single batch of granite slabs is like any other, and many different colors and patterns are available.

4. Adds Aesthetic Value

Granite bathroom countertops are a great way to add an aesthetic appeal to your home. As a natural stone, granite adds aesthetic beauty to any room design.

This makes it the perfect material for a bathroom remodel, particularly when planning to sell your home since the bathroom is one of the most important parts of your house.

Cons of Using Granite Bathroom Countertops

While they normally improve the look and design of any bathroom, granite countertops have some drawbacks, which we'll discuss below.

1. Granite Countertops are Expensive

Granite bathroom countertops are expensive, averaging $80 to $150 per square foot.

In contrast, marble countertops cost $40 to $80 per square foot and an average of $60 per square foot. Granite is more expensive because it requires special equipment to cut, offers superior looks, and is available in more colors and designs.

2. Granite Requires Sealing

It's a fact that granite countertops are incredibly durable. However, since granite is porous by nature, it needs frequent resealing. Makeup, shoe polish, hair dye, and other substances can leave stains if granite countertops are not sealed every year or two.

Wrapping Up

Granite is an excellent material for bathroom countertops for many reasons. It's durable, stain resistant, and is available in a wide variety of colors.

However, much like anything else, granite is not without drawbacks. It's expensive, and if not well maintained, it may lose its waterproof and stain-resistant properties. This is because granite, like other natural stones, is porous and needs to be resealed at least once a year.
